It is estimated that
approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation's
shelters in 2008. Approximately 56 percent of dogs that enter shelters
are euthanized because they are not adopted.

A dog spayed
before her first heat cycle has approximately 0% chance of producing mammary
tumors. After her first heat cycle she has 8% chance, second
heat cycle increases her chances to 26%, and if she's left intact she
reaches close to 50%. Approximately 40% of mammary lumps spread to other areas of the body.

Pyometra is when bacteria
enters the uterine, grows and causes an infection. A dog with Pyometra must be spayed immediately, prior to the uterine rupturing and allowing the
bacteria to fill the abdomen.
